My first full time job was a company where there was not a defined dress code policy, but the norm was to dress like your boss. Every male employee in the company wore a shirt and ties every day. During special occasions there would be a casual Friday, but they were few and far between. The casual Fridays normally were still button down shirts but we didn't wear ties.
At this time I was a PC support person. My job was just going from office to office to fix computer problems, and repair upgrade hardware. Every morning I would stop by the help desk and get all the trouble tickets, get my parts, plan a route, and start going from office to office.
I found many of times when I was working under a desk, or tearing apart a PC my tie would always get in the way, and they always seemed to catch on every circuit board. So all my ties had little snags in them, and I always seemed to need new ones. I finally got smart and started stuffing my tie in my shirt between two buttons, but it was always a pain.
As I would work in accounting on the PCs I always noticed that their dress code was a lot more relaxed than what was the norm. I don't know if it was because most of accounting was women, but it was just the way it was.
One hot summer day we had a total company meeting. We didn't have these very often, maybe two times a year, so it was always kind of a big deal to go to these and see what was up. Well, this meeting just happens to be on the same day as a casual Friday. I was standing in the back like normal because there never seemed to be enough chairs, and the men were supposed to stand to make sure the women had place to sit. The group of people I ended up being close by were a lot of the Vice Presidents, which was cool for me since I was just a lowly PC guy, and then it happened.
One of the young cute accounting ladies came in, in the shortest shorts I had ever seen. The shorts from the backside really didn't cover things so as she walked by the VPs and I and went to a seat up front, we kind of had a show the entire trip. It turned out that they did not find that professional at all, and decided we needed a corporate dress code policy.
We had heard that the policy was going to happen any time, and most of us in I.T. were afraid we might have to wear suits now also, but when we got the memo it mentioned many things about appropriate attire, etc, but the best thing it said was "Men must wear a shirt with a collar" . There was no mention of a tie! Even my boss when he read it starting taking off his tie. It was like the best day ever.
All the I.T. guys that had a wear a tie for years, thought fondly of Miss Short Shorts, not only for the extremely short shorts she wore that day, but also because those shorts allowed us not have to wear ties!
